Introducing Here One™: The Future Of In-Ear Computing

At Doppler Labs, we believe that audio and voice will be a key part of the next wave of computing. We believe that by moving CPUs, sensors, speakers, and mics onto the body—and specifically into the ears—we can make computing more immersive, more human, and get you out of your screen. We believe in order to achieve this, we must create products that are worn proudly, as much a function of fashion as a piece of technology.

Just as Microsoft put “a computer on every desk” and Apple put a computer in every pocket, our mission is to put a computer, speaker, and mic in every ear. After three years of development, we’re proud to announce our flagship product in service of that vision: Here One, the first all-in-one wireless listening system—and the last thing you’ll ever put in your ears.

Our mission is to put a computer, speaker, and mic in every ear.

With two wireless smart earbuds and a connected app, Here One combines the functionality of conventional headphones—streamed music and wireless phone calls—with our proprietary smart listening and noise filtering technologies. Whether it’s reducing noise (say, a crying baby), amplifying speech, accessing Siri or Google Now, streaming music, taking phone calls, or layering digital audio over real-world sound (stream Spotify on a run safely aware of what’s around you), Here One does it all.

Where We’ve Been

The past year has been a whirlwind for Doppler Labs: we engineered, built and shipped our “concept car” Here Active Listening; won SXSW’s Best of Show, TIME Magazine’s Best Inventions of the Year, Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies, and Cannes Lions Gold in Product Design; and partnered with the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival to bring Here Active Listening to hundreds of thousands of attendees.

Since introducing Here Active Listening in a limited run, over 100,000 people joined our waitlist. We’ve also received incredible feedback from our 10,000 early adopters (the “Here Pioneers”) that we’ve used to define the feature set for Here One. Through this process two things became clear: there’s much more excitement around real-world sound control than we expected (and a desire for even more control over unwanted noise), and also overwhelming demand to combine Here’s core functionality with music streaming and phone calls.

The result is Here One: the first in-ear computer, and a platform we can build on for years to come.

So What Makes Here One Different?

Unlike traditional headphones, which isolate you from the world and have limited features, we’ve created a product that you can comfortably leave in your ears—even in social settings or places where you need to easily communicate or interact with the world around you.

Adaptive Noise Filters and Amplification

Currently, we don’t have a way to control what we hear, but with Here One, that all changes. We’ve taken the noise filters from Here Active Listening and dramatically improved them so that you can now selectively cancel or amplify particular sounds using Smart Noise Cancellation. Whereas Here Active Listening removed entire frequency ranges, Here One introduces our proprietary “adaptive filters,” which identify and target sounds—such as human speech, sirens, a crying baby, a jet engine, and more—so you can suppress or amplify those sounds exactly to your liking. Plus, you can still find the original EQ, volume, sound effects, and “tune in” presets from Here Active Listening.

Smart Assistants

It’s become increasingly clear that voice interaction with smart A.I.s (Siri, Google Now, Alexa, Cortana) is going to play a major role in the future of how we interact with computers, information and the world. Here One—with its multiple microphones—is uniquely positioned to give you direct access to these services.

Layered Listening

Headphones—as we currently know them—are isolating. If someone wants to talk to you while you’re using them, you have to pause and take the headphones off to engage or communicate. With Here One, this is no longer an issue. You can now stream bluetooth-enabled audio and listen to your surroundings simultaneously, blended perfectly so you never miss what’s happening around you. Layer play-by-play commentary or stats at a game for a better experience from the stands, safely listen to music while riding your bike, or get updates during a meeting.

Personalized Listening

Our Here Pioneers helped us understand that we all hear the world differently. To account for these differences, Here One learns your preferences, provides suggestions based on your environment, and adjusts according to your unique Listening Profile.
